Propel Cloud Rider Review [2023]

The Propel Cloud Rider HD 2.0 Is an intermediate to advanced level drone pack with lots of features at an affordable price.

Propel is a US-based company that specializes in flight and radio-controlled devices.

It was established in 2006 and was one of the lesser-known drone manufacturers.

However, they gained popularity among movie fanatics with its Star Wars collector’s edition series.

The series featured Battle Quadcopter models based on the iconic spacecraft from the movie franchise such as the X-Wing, Tie Fighter and the Speeder Bike.

After their success with these models, Propel drones were flying off shelves.

One of the most popular is the Propel Cloud Rider HD 2.0 even though it wasn’t part of the Star Wars collection.

Today, we’ll take an in-depth look at this quadcopter in this Propel Cloud Rider review.

This quadcopter comes with a wide-range digital radio that allows you to fly out to 500 feet to take videos and stills with the onboard camera.

It is the perfect unit for beginners and experienced pilots with its three-speed settings so you can choose the speed based on your piloting skills.

The Propel Cloud Ride can also perform 360-degree push button stunt rolls and other tricks in the air to enhance your drone flight experience.

The Propel Cloud Rider with its built-in flight assist features and HD streaming camera makes flying the drone easy.

Propel Cloud Rider HD 2.0 drone features

The Cloud Rider HD drone is a mid-size drone that is capable of carrying an HD camera.

The body of the drone is relatively small but the arms that hold the blades are long.

This gives the entire drone a dimension of 21.5 x 19.5 x 4 inches and an overall weight of around 1 pound.

The unit comes with four rotors and shields for the blades.

It also has large struts for landing which gives it the height necessary to protect the underside or belly of the drone and the camera.

There are four LED lights underneath the rotors; two green ones and two red ones.

A space on the back of the drone is where you place the battery.

The battery compartment has a simple plug-and-play socket so inserting the battery shouldn’t be too difficult.

Overall, the drone seems to be sturdy and well built.

cloud rider drone review FPV view

This drone comes with a 720p high-definition onboard camera that captures pictures and videos of decent quality.

The pictures and videos can be stored on the SD card which is included in the package.

Moreover, the 720p HD camera also allows for FPV flying.

This means that the onboard camera can send a live feed straight to your phone.

FPV flight allows you to see what the drone sees to fully immerse yourself in the drone flight experience.

The wide-range digital radio controller can send live footage and video from up to 350 feet when flying in FPV mode.

The quadcopter is equipped with a 6 axis gyro and air pressure sensors.

These make the drone stable enough to take good quality photos and videos without much blurriness or distortion.

Using the camera is easy, all you do is press the corresponding button on the radio controller to take a photo or press and hold to capture video.

Radio controller/transmitter

The Propel Cloud Rider comes with a 2.4 GHz transmitter.

The transmitter has good ergonomics and feels comfortable in the hands.

It is designed in a similar manner to most transmitters of drones in this category.

Everything is where you would expect it to be on this drone so that makes it easier to use.

However, the drone comes with lots of features so it really won’t have very simple controls like others in its class.

That being said, the manufacturers have tried to keep things as simple as possible so you shouldn’t have any issues.

The controller comes with two sticks that are used for vertical and horizontal control as well as throttle.

Apart from this, there is an auto takeoff and land button, a 360-degree flip button and a few camera function buttons.

The controller requires the use of 6X AA batteries which may increase the weight and make the controller a little bit heavy.

The control range of the controller is out to 500 feet to take photos and videos while in FPV mode you get a live stream up to 350 feet.

This drone is powered by a 3.7V 1200 mAh battery.

Two of these batteries are included in the package.

This means you can expand flight time by swapping out one battery for the other when one runs out of power.

You just have to keep them both fully charged when heading out to fly.

A single fully charged battery is said to deliver 10 minutes of flight time in ideal conditions.

However, if you are performing flips,  tricks, flying at a fast rate or in FPV mode, you may run out of power long before 10 minutes.

Inserting the battery inside the drone is easy.

There is a space at the back of the drone that is easily accessible and uses an easy plug-and-play system.

This ensures that you don’t have a hard time inserting the battery

Advanced features

Auto Take-Off/Landing

The Propel Cloud Rider comes with an Auto Take-Off/Landing feature.

This allows the drone to automatically take off with just one touch of a button.

It also automatically lands when the same button is pressed while the drone is in the air.

You can still use direction commands when using both the takeoff and landing feature in order to avoid obstacles that may be in the drone’s flight path.

The automatic takeoff and land feature is great for beginners who aren’t yet comfortable with performing these two tasks manually.

FPV Control

FPV offers a drone flight experience like no other.

It gives you a first-person view and allows you to see what the drone sees in real-time.

This immersive experience opens up a whole new world and gives you a different perspective from above.

FPV flight is fun and exciting.

This technology is popular in the drone racing world but other drone pilots are taking advantage of it in other fields as well.

FPV allows you to see what the drone sees so you know exactly what and what not to capture.

VR Mode

This unit also comes with a VR mode.

The FPV function enables the VR mode.

This means you can enjoy a VR experience using VR glasses.

You will get a truly immersive experience using the drone with VR glasses.

Once the VR Mode is activated, the live feed will be sent straight to your VR glasses instead of going to your phone.

Flight Altitude Lock

The Cloud Rider comes with a unique altitude lock and air pressure sensor that allows for easier flight control and stability.

It is more of a beginner-friendly feature as it allows the user to get comfortable with controlling the quadcopter.

The sensor locks in the altitude of the unit and allows the user to adjust to the directional controls without having to hold the throttle.

You can activate this feature by starting the copter and flying it upwards to a safe height using the left stick.

Once you’re at a safe height, release the throttle and the drone should remain locked at that altitude.

This allows you to focus on getting familiar with the directional controls of the drone.

Do note that sometimes during flight, the drone tends to self-correct and may go back to the last locked height after being moved up or down by outside forces.

Speed Control

The drone comes with three-speed settings; Slow. Medium and High.

The default setting when you first power on your cloud rider drone is set to the Slow Speed Mode.

Beginners should start flying the drone at this speed so that they can learn to control the drone.

Experienced pilots may want to increase the speed since they are comfortable with flying drones.

If more speed is needed, you can simply push the speed setting button on the controller.

You will hear 2 beeps which mean that the drone has changed from the Slow Speed Mode to the Medium-Speed Mode.

If you want to go faster, press the Speed Setting button again and this time, you’ll hear three beeps.

This indicates that you are now flying the drone in High-Speed Mode.

If you want to return to the Slow Speed Mode, press the speed setting button again and you will hear one beep which means that you’re back on slow speed.

Flight Experience

Manual Start/Stop

If you are an experienced pilot you may choose not to use the auto takeoff /landing feature.

To manually start the drone, move the 2 controller sticks on the controller down and out.

Hold them there until the rotors start spinning.

Once the rotors are spinning release the sticks to their neutral position and push the throttle up to take off.

To land the quadcopter manually, move both sticks down and out again and push the throttle all the way down.

This will safely land the drone.

Overall, the drone seems pretty easy to fly whether you choose to use the auto take-off/landing feature or manual take-off and landing.

The 6 axis gyro and air pressure sensors deliver a stable flight so even someone unfamiliar with flying a drone can fly it.

The 3-speed setting also makes it easier to fly since you can choose the speed you’re most comfortable with.

In the end, the flight experience is pleasant once you fly the unit in a wide-open outdoor space in ideal conditions.
